I'm Paul Knight. I'm a city planner (AICP) and architectural designer at [Historical Concepts](https://www.historicalconcepts.com/) and Director of Research at the [Doug Allen Institute](https://dougalleninstitute.org/).
I found myself copying and pasting the same ideas over and over to share with different people and figured this website would streamline that process.
I've also encountered a few ideas and things that made me aware of how important it is for us to control our own work and writing, to not hand it over to social-media silos, and to create the internet we want:
- [*"The Garden and the Stream"*](https://hapgood.us/2015/10/17/the-garden-and-the-stream-a-technopastoral/) [*(archive)*](https://web.archive.org/web/20250507212243/https://hapgood.us/2015/10/17/the-garden-and-the-stream-a-technopastoral/), an essay promoting the idea of a "digital garden".
- [IndieWeb](https://indieweb.org/), a consortium of independent writers and web developers.
- The book [*Indie Microblogging*](https://book.micro.blog/) [*(archive)*](https://web.archive.org/web/20250423033520/https://book.micro.blog/), a short history of micro.blog and social media in general.
- [Kagi](https://kagi.com), a better search engine that promotes high-quality content rather than paid links.
All this was inspiring and made me want to contribute to the "small internet."
So here you go. Welcome to my digital garden, my little piece of internet real estate.

This website is managed through [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/) and its [Publish](https://obsidian.md/publish) service. It uses the [Minimal Publish](https://github.com/kepano/obsidian-minimal-publish) template and many inspirations from [Kepano](https://stephango.com/about). Posts are individual, plain-text [markdown](https://www.markdownguide.org/getting-started/) files (`.md`) stored locally on my computer then pushed to Obsidian's servers from where it is transmitted to your device.
